Our Story
Oohmamii® - The home of Asian flavours was founded with a vision to bring authentic home-cooked Asian meals to all Australians.
The idea for Australia's first and finest Asian-prepared meals came out of COVID as a way to connect and cook through the pain of separation and loss. I come from a long line of entrepreneurs, so at 50, I chose to pursue my passion. Swapping my heels and suit for an apron, I left the comfort of corporate finance.
My name is Virginia Chung (born Hong Ngoc Nguyen)- and this is my story.
Zest for fun & flavour
My father, Chín Châu, loved nhậu, a Vietnamese ritual where men get together to tell bad jokes about life over street food with beer on ice. He was also a savvy businessman, transacting over the exotic tastes of regional Vietnam.
Eventually, he opened a high-end garden restaurant, Đào Nguyên Quán, to cater for his clients. This is where I spent my childhood, among the beautiful chaos of family-restaurant culture.
Arriving in Australia in 1979 as refugees, we turned our rented home into a makeshift weekend restaurant. Life became balancing the joys of school, simmering broths, listening to Dad’s bad jokes, and serving our community with simple home-cooked dishes. Rinse and repeat.
Dad died young, but he lived well. Oohmamii® is a tribute to his philosophy.
Food is memory
After his death, Mum chose the life of a Buddhist Nun, and some of our family’s most-loved meals disappeared with her new vegetarian diet. When my beloved eldest sister, Lien, passed away, her four boys and I lost the line to her intuitive food talent. Now all high-flying professionals working across the globe, I try to keep her memory alive by recreating her recipes for her boys.
Food is unity, passion, families and love.
